a pretty cool life.: August 2012

They say every cloud has a silver lining.
The boys are at school.
Sister and I get time alone.

So after she finished her obligatory Lego destruction (brothers need not be present for that to be fun), we made a trip to the thrift.

We did find some treasures.

A milkglass bowl, a few China saucers, an aqua dish I just liked.

This little shelf thingy.  I plan to revamp it into something cute and girly for the baby's room.

I bought these for the frames to repaint, but now that I've been looking at them they're starting to look...so bad they're good?

This project might just be worth a try.

A Pyrex pattern I'd never seen before (butterfly gold, I think??) and Fiestaware mugs.

And I didn't take separate pics, but the scale and glass dome.
I don't know what I plan on doing with the scale just yet, since I have the identical one in yellow on our kitchen counter already.
The dome is perfect for a sweet little detail atop a cake stand.

All in all, not bad for around 20 bucks.

I didn't realize that it's been such a long time since I've been a regular thrifter!  It's good to be back.  :)

We took another big step in our lives.

I dropped off two boys at school for the first time.

Little Brother is officially a preschooler.
(But insists that he, too, is a kindergartner since he wears nothing but his brother's uniform shirt. :))

So for six hours a week, it's just Baby Sister and me.

A little lonely?

I'm a mix of emotions.

He did great today.
And we couldn't be prouder.

This boy is nothing like his reserved, rule following, soft spoken older brother.  Since the day he was born, he has been his own person, doing his own thing.  He's a character that one, and I'm never quite sure what to expect.

But he rocked it.  :)

Now I just need to get used to our new normal.
Two boys dressed, fed, and out the door for school twice a week.
Oy vey.

And good luck to all you mamas dropping your babies off for the first time, too!

50 years.

Yesterday my in laws celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
50 years.
Such a crazy huge accomplishment!

I love old pictures.
I love my husband's parents.
So I just had to share...hope you enjoy them too. :)

Such a pretty bride.
Such a handsome groom.
Hope we make it that long...we're pretty much out of conversation and it's only been 7 years.  Kidding! ;)

Have a good week, friends!

our instagrammy week

My baby.  In kindergarten.  Not cool.

I'm always happy to pick my husband up from the airport.  Being a single parent is not easy.

I heart sushi carryout.

Crafting as a my-baby-is-in-kindergarten distraction.

Uniforms delivered the day before school starts.  Procrastinator extraordinaire.

No sense in a trip to Target without more Legos...

Love you backyard garden.

Don't like handwashing dishes, but do like pretty dishtowels.

Lunch, courtesy of my fave 3 year old.

Love you, Ikea.

Really love you, Ikea.

Summer, please don't end.

Keeping busy.

Hope you had a good weekend, friends!

Keeping busy.

I've started a whole lot of projects lately.

Big, bad kindergarten is taking my baby 5 times a week now.

So in an attempt to not think about it too much, I'm making stuff.

Yesterday it was these peg bear softies.
Super easy.  Quick.  And all materials I had on hand.
(Original pattern found here.)

How do you handle your babies growing up and going to school?

Eating cupcakes?

Or do you spend the day high five-ing everyone you see? ;)

our instagrammed week

A little peek into the past week, through filtered iphone photos.

Teeny crossed ankles.  I die.

Our tomatoes are finally ripening.

Sophie's attempted jailbreak?

I'm calling shenanigans on the mailman.  3 issues arrive on the same day?

We're a whole bunch of carnivores.

Primed and ready.

Lefty love.

Binding the quilt.

Wondering why I've never made this.

If you'd like to follow along during the week, I'm @aprettycoollife on instagram or my pics post to facebook, too. :)

barrette jars

I'm still pretty new to the whole mama of a girl thing.

Boys don't accessorize much.

Shin guards.
Baseball hats.
Rain boots.

But now that Sister has a tuft of hair worthy of barrettes and bows I need a way to keep them.  There are tons of cutesy ideas on Pinterest, but I just don't have the patience to clip and re-clip barrettes just to store them.  Tossing them in a jar is more my style. :)

I used a cracker jar (from Walmart), a candy jar (so old I can't remember where it came from...thrifted maybe??), and a giraffe topped pickle jar.

I'm sure you've seen these animal topped jars all over blogland.  They're so easy to make.

So easy!

Happy weekend, friends.
