Our kitchen remodel
We knew as soon as we bought this house the kitchen had SO much potential. Five years later, we've finally done what we dreamed of with it.
Prepare yourself for some truly crappy photography.
The befores...

As you can see, there were several things we needed to change. The kitchen was cluttered and cramped and just wasn't very pleasant to be in. We did not like the oak cabinets one bit, there was hardly any counter, cabinet, or storage space, the fridge next to the back door formed a tunnel, we wanted to open the doorway to the dining room even further, and we were not using half of the entire kitchen. You know, nothing much.
We also wanted to keep the style of our 1946 home while changing it all. It was a tall order, and took nearly 8 weeks to complete.
And this what we did with the place...

We chose white appliances over stainless to keep everything looking as open and airy as possible. (And I would never be able to stand the fingerprints!)

We kept the original cabinet boxes and just replaced the doors. It's nice that we have the original cabinets still in tact, but probably would have been cheaper and faster to have just torn them out and replaced them entirely.

I will warn anyone considering black granite that it is just like a black car....it seems like it would hide dirt, but it shows everything! Dust, little finger prints, everything. We were debating between a dark gray and black and kind of regret our decision.

Moving the refrigerator to the opposite wall gave the kitchen so much counter space, and since I was previously without a pantry, the 4 cabinets next to the fridge are now all food storage space.
I also totally recommend the Kenmore Elite french door fridge we bought. It has an icemaker in the freezer and water dispenser inside the fridge, so we have as much door space as possible.
The new back door in desperate need of a (mis)treatment. I'm planning on a navy toile roman shade. Just throw that project on the pile of things I need to do.
The cabinet glass we chose is called "wavy seedy." It looks really reflective in this pic, but it just has a nice, vintage-y feel to it.

The new arch, which is our view from the kitchen into the dining room. Don't mind the Exersaucer in the corner. At least I straightened up before I took pictures...

Our mosaic tile on the floor. True to our 1940s style! At over $9/square foot, it would have been cheaper had we just gone with wood to match the rest of our house, but I like how clean I can get tile.
I love my little crock filled with dish detergent. A great eBay find!
The tin ceiling is probably my most favorite aspect of the new kitchen. The picture (of course) does not do it justice. It's painted high gloss white and is SO BEAUTIFUL!
I love it! I love white cabinets. We just finished a renovation last year and redid all the cabinets white and the island dark brown.
ReplyDeleteJust a note....everytime I stop by your blog it looks a little sassier ;) I like it!

I am loving this! We just recently painted our cabinets white after living with them for 7 years! The change is so great! I have considered doing the tin tile backsplash. Did you install it yourself? We have a fake tin ceiling (textured wallpaper) in our dining room. Yours looks fabulous! Nice work!
ReplyDeleteShelly-we had it installed by our tile guy and it took him no more than an hour to do it all. They came in 2x2 sheets, and used liquid nails to hang them. Aside from the cuts, it's totally an easy project.
ReplyDeleteI love white cabinets! Love, love, love it! :) So glad to have found your blog! :)

sent over from Kimba at A Soft Place to Land. What a great makeover! It must give you a great sense of accomplishment - it should.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a beautiful kitchen. I love, love, love the tin ceiling and white cabinets.
ReplyDeleteI love that you stayed true to the age and feel of the home, and yet made a comfortable user-friendly, kitchen for today. Love the floor and the ceiling! Really nice work!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous transformation! I'm seriously contemplating painting my kitchen cabs white and I have white appliances. It's nice to see your photos since most of the white kitchens I've seen have stainless steel appliances. Did you paint the cabs? What was the paint color you used on the cabs if you painted them?
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog via Kimba's blog. Your new kitchen looks fabulous! I've got an Exersaucer in my kitchen too--gotta love the sound when a happy baby bounces and all of the toys clatter :)
ReplyDeleteTerrific redo! The kitchen is totally transformed. The beauty of paint!!!!! Blessings, Jennifer
ReplyDeleteI came over from Kimba's place to give you some comment lovin. Your kitchen is just perfect!!

ReplyDeleteI have just finished our kitchen makeover in Ireland - yours is lovely.
ReplyDeleteMy fave bit is probably the tin splash back!
Awesome kitchen!!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I love all the little details that really inject charm into your finished room. I especially love the tin ceiling! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful kitchen! I'm glad you re-used your cabinet boxes- that was very "green" of you. I also love that ceiling and that floor! Bravo!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome. This is a lot like what I'm doing to our 1947 kitchen. At least the tin backsplash, white painted cabinets, white appliances. It was great to see the tin in place, and not just one piece that I have leaning against the wall right now. =)
ReplyDeleteI love this post.
Beautiful kitchen re-do! I love the white cabinets and the tin ceiling is just gorgeous! I found you through Kimba and am so glad I did! : )
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
ReplyDeleteI know I commented before, but WOW! I love those glass fronts!

ReplyDeleteGorgeous! So bright, clean, and fresh!
ReplyDeleteWoWzers! Just WoWzers!!
ReplyDeleteCheryl, I LOVE your new kitchen. :) The ceiling is amazing, and I also really like your backsplash. :) Did you do a lot of the work yourselves or did you hire a contractor?
ReplyDeletePS. Your children look so happy in the pics. ;) ;)
Your kitchen looks great! I cannot wait until we can redo our 1960s mess of a kitchen.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your kitchen remodel, it's beautiful! God's blessings on your sweet family, Sarah :D
ReplyDeleteCheryl, this really does look wonderful. You did such a great job! I especially like the way you kept the 1940's look. Just marvelous, darling!!

ReplyDeleteIt. is. GORGEOUS! I'm dyin' of jealousy hear. Way to go on a fabulous makeover!
ReplyDeleteLove it! I am dying to paint my cabinets white. They look gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteSigh. Love this Kitchen. Still envious. :) If you have a chance to add the link to my party somewhere, that would be great. :)
ReplyDeleteJust gorgeous. Good job!
ReplyDeleteThe first thought that came to my mind was - I love the floor! And the rest of it :)
Its gorgeous! Love the tin :)
ReplyDeleteLove what you did in here...so nice to see something a little different (instead of dark cabinets and stainless). We just replaced our dishwasher and were debating on the stainless issue as well. Decided to stick with our current white appliances for similar reasons: easier to keep clean, less expensive, show wear better etc. Great job!
ReplyDeleteWow that's beautiful! I'd love to do something like that with ours.
ReplyDeleteWow! Your kitchen looks so much bigger in white! Love the makeover!
